"A beautifully crafted book about the joys of sharing a special moment, this will inspire in children an appreciation of nature." —School Library Journal (starred review)
A dad and his daughter make a kind of everyday magic in this third lyrical story from the creative team behind Mum, Me, and the Mulberry Tree and Grandpa Is Here!
A father wakes his little girl, and together they tiptoe barefoot outside, stepping quietly into the cool nighttime garden. They wait to see it—their snuffling, shuffling nocturnal visitor. And what a treat to behold not just one hedgehog, but a mama and her three adorable, prickly babies, all coming over for a little sip of water before moseying straight into the “hedgehog highway” their human patrons created for them. Based on the author’s childhood memories, The Night of the Hedgehog is as tender and sweet a father-daughter book as they come, and a story sure to inspire a new generation of hedgehog spotters.
Tanya Rosie is a children’s book editor who also writes poems and picture books. She grew up in a household filled with Iranian traditions (from her mum) and some Scottish ones, too (from her dad). Mum, Me, and the Mulberry Tree is her first picture book. She lives in England.
A little girl and her bespectacled father, white, get up on a warm night to observe the hedgehog family that frequents their garden. They quietly tiptoe out of their house and wait. Finally they observe a “brave, prickly mother” and three hoglets. The most exciting part is when the animals find the “hog hole” that the family carved in their garden wall for the hedgehogs to be able to travel to neighboring gardens.
Rhyming text in the voice of the girl makes the story feel personal and important, and it really is an adventure in the natural world that exists in a background garden. The mixed media artwork is executed in shades of dark nighttime blue, and lots of nighttime creatures are found in the background- a fox, an owl, some snails. My favorite spread shows a cross section of the house, including the basement with mice living below, and the ground outside that shows a hedgehog hibernaculum. There’s a nifty map at the end, also shown at night, that shows the route that the hedgehog family takes around the neighborhood. This is a sweet story with a gentle father/daughter adventure.
A father gently wakes his daughter with a flashlight in hand, and together they head outside to quietly observe a family of hedgehogs. This tender picture book celebrates the bond between father and daughter, capturing the quiet magic of a shared nighttime moment.
With soft, muted artwork and gentle rhyming prose, this story makes a lovely choice for bedtime reading or preschool storytimes. It’s sure to inspire little readers to imagine their own cozy nighttime adventures.

Super sweet story of a child and her father who have eagerly been awaiting a visit from the local hedgehogs! This book is a great way to end your day-- and to give you some ideas on helping your animal neighbors!
A quiet nighttime book about a father and daughter that go into the yard to see a family of hedgehogs. They give it water and help it move along it's night journey. Was a sweet book for kids who like quiet stories.
I loved the concept and illustrations. I want to read more books about the vibrancy of the night! However, I felt the story was hindered by a forced rhyme scheme
A tender, lyrical father-daughter story celebrating the quiet magic of nature as they watch a hedgehog family visit their garden. Sweet, gentle, and perfect for young readers.
