Best-selling author Kelly Irvin splits her writing time between Amish romances and romantic suspense. Her latest release is Trust Me (2/8/22), a romantic suspense novel set in San Antonio's historic art district. It explores broken trust and whether trust can ever be restored. Publishers Weekly called it a "whirlwind romantic thriller" and "an emotional rollercoaster."

Her latest Amish romance is Love's Dwelling, the first book in the Amish Blessings series, which released in July 2021. The series takes place in Yoder and Haven, Kansas, and looks at adoption among the Amish. The series follows her Amish romance series, Amish of Sky Country includes Mountains of Grace, followed by The Long Bridge Home, and Peace in the Valley. The series explores Amish communities in northwest Montana and how they are impacted by wildfires.

Other romantic suspense novels include Her Every Move, which Publishers Weekly called gripping suspense and said, "loving descriptions of San Antonio’s attractions enhance the well-paced plot."

The publication called Closer Than She Knows a "brisk, smoothly written, thriller."

Kelly's Every Amish Season series includes Upon A Spring Breeze, Beneath the Summer Sun, Through the Autumn Air, and With Winter's First Frost from Zondervan/HarperCollins Christian Publishing. Henrietta, Hen for short, Miller loves animals and they love her back. She loves them so much she has applied for a job as a veterinary assistant at the local vets office. Nicholes Byler likes Animals also and in fact he just got a new job with Dr. McDonald, the local veterinarian, as an assistant. Actually he just got sent out to the Miller’s farm to check out an older horse who hasn’t been eating lately. The first person he runs into is a fiesty Amish lady named Hen. She seems to think he can’t make a diagnosis on Jack, the old horse. He doesn’t know Hen at all so why would she doubt his ability to treat the Miller’s horse?
Hen has never been much for house keeping, sewing or baking and cooking. She’d rather muck the stalls or work with her goats. She’s not very ladylike but she doesn’t care. She’s doing what makes her happy. Her Father, Bishop Miller has other ideas on how Henrietta should be spending her time. She’s 22 and has never been courted by any of the local Amish men. It’s time for Bishop Miller to put his foot down and demand that his older daughter do women’s chores in the house.
This book was a slow burn romance story that drew me in quickly. At times it was humorous and at times sad. It became a page turner and the ending was very good. I thought the book was unpredictable, entertaining and realistic. One of the characters suffered from Dementia and readers get a glimpse into that family’s life as they try to care for their loved one.
I highly recommend this book to readers of Amish Fiction and Amish Romance. It’s part of The Heart of the Amish series but can be read as a standalone. A Daughter’s Choice is scheduled for release on 11/1/25.
I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are solely my own.

This novel is a bit emotional, I rarely cry when reading but I became so attached to the characters I was heartbroken over a horrible incident that occurred.

I loved the characters with Hen bring my favorite. Her love of animals was a huge part of why I lined her. The spiritual growth and maturity made for a stress.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy.

This was a sweet story about a young Amish woman who had such a heart for animals. Unfortunately, her heart for animals supersedes everything else which causes her father, who is the bishop, to become frustrated and harsh with her. This conflict between father and daughter frustrated me quite a bit, I thought that his approach was harsh.

The story was sweet but was pretty slow moving for me.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

You're focused on what you want instead of what God wants for you.

Henrietta Miller is not your typical Amish young woman. She is not pining for any Amish man but she is pining for her goats. She desperate to operate a goat farm. However, her widowed father the Bishop has other hopes for her. In fact he is worried that her focus is not where it should be.

Nicholas Byler has just recently moved from his parents home with his younger sister to take care of his grandfather who is suffering from dementia. He also is working as part time veterinary assistant, while his younger sister stays home caring for their grandfather. When he receives a call from the Miller's to look at a ailing horse, Henrietta is not impressed with Nicholas. Could it be she wanted the position of veterinary assistant or was Nicholas a know it all. Nicholas was more intrigued by the likes of Henrietta.

The tension is what drives the plot and the characters. Henrietta with the expectations of what her father wants- a daughter that is more domesticated and focused on her role.. and Nicholas who is thinking of furthering his career as a veterinarian. A move that he would have to leave the faith to pursue. Together because of their focus, they become focused on each other and come to an understanding of God's will, family and community. How easily we lose touch with God's best for us when we don't see the whole picture.

A special thank you to Barbour Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Kelly Irvin is a new-to-me author, and what a fun introduction! A story that involves goats, veterinarians and veterinarian assistants, and main characters who love animals as much as I do, is certainly a must-read in my opinion. Then to set it in Amish country, well that just seems like icing on the cake!

Another attraction for me was the main character's name: Henrietta. My paternal grandmother's name was Henrietta. Poor "Hen" (as she is referred to by her family and friends) definitely doesn't fit the mold of a good Amish young lady! She'd rather work with her goats than cook or clean house! I mean, can you really blame her?!

Then to discover that Nicholas is about as animal crazy as she is! It's just totally a captivating story, and I didn't want to stop reading.

If you enjoy sweet Amish fiction, full of animals, then you'll want to add A Daughter's Choice to your TBR pile.

I have enjoyed Kelly Irvin’s Amish novels for years, even decades. This one pulled me right in as the characters grabbed my attention and my empathy. A young woman who loves animals, Henrietta struggles with her role in her motherless family, where she would rather be working outdoors than stuck inside doing domestic chores. Nicholas, the new vet’s assistant, sees past her messiness and unconventiality, but he longs to study to become a veterinarian so feels he must deny his growing feelings for Hen. The story takes readers through mishaps, her sister’s wedding, traumas, and plenty of animal encounters. The people seem so real in this character-driven drama. They are engaging and fun to read about. I would like to see more in the same setting, perhaps with other family members featured in the future. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. #ADaughtersChoice #NetGalley

Struggling to be a proper Amish maed, Hen (Henrietta) would rather work with the animals, going so far as to apply for a vet assistant's position against her daed's wishes. Enter Nicholas, the new vet assistant. At 22 and 23, Hen and Nicholas are past the usual age for marrying and Hen's daed, also the bishop, worries if she ever will marry. Will Hen achieve her dream of raising more goats and working with the animals? Will Nicholas leave the faith to become a veterinarian? Mishaps and near tragedies result in a page-turning, can't put it down novel by Kelly Irvin. A Daughter's Choice is wunderbarr!

A Daughter's Choice is the first book I have read written by Kelly Irvin. It was a sweet Amish story, full of faith, Amish traditions, and romance.

Henrietta wishes to work with animals, helping as a vet assistant, but her father forbids it. When Nicholas "steals" her position, Hen is upset. As Nicholas is in town to take care of his grandfather, Hen connects with his grandfather and helps. The more they seem to be thrown together, the more Hen has feelings for Nicholas.
This was a great story for those who love cozy Amish romance stories.

Simba happily gives this book 4 paws

Fans of Kelly Irvin and amish fiction will love this sentimental, and inspirational Amish romance. Readers be taken to a place where faith, family, and community are valued and will learn some important insights into the sovereignty of God.

Henrietta, daughter to the local bishop, loves and animals and desires nothing more than to spend her life around animals and grow her goat business. She does this at the expense of everything and everyone else. Her father, wanting her to be the ideal Amish woman so she can marry and have children of her own as to restrain her and hold her back. Then enter Nicholas, the new vet assistant, who in Henrietta's eyes has taken her dream job. While these two butt heads in the beginning they share a deep love foe animals and desire for them to be a part of their lives. Can these two learn what true surrender and dying to self looks like?

Irvin does a such a great job in weaving their stories together while sprinkling biblical truths throughout. Readers will root for these two to find Gods will for their life and learn that Joy does come with the morning.

A special thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC to read and review. all opinions are my own.

Kelly Irvin has written another 5 star book. Such a sweet read with real life issues that keeps the characters on their toes as they try and figure out what is best for them. Filled with matchmaking and second guessing their decisions of what they want in life, I found this to be fun read.

A five-star read! Henrietta is a preacher's kid. In an Amish story, that means she's the Bishop's daughter. Ever see a TV show where the father throws up his hands, shakes his head, and says, "I don't know what to do with her"? Add that he is a widower. With younger children. And Hen (only her father calls her Henrietta) wants to be a vet assistant, not only *keep* her goats BUT expand the herd ... AND have her own store.

Your introduction to Hen begins with a goat, strike that, a kid named Petunia. You know how much Hen loves her goats when she thinks the manure smells like perfume. Can you see my eyes rolling? Although once my husband and I passed a truckload of steers going to market. He said, "Oh, that smell!" And I said, "Smells like money." Note: I am a farmer's daughter coming from a line of farmers back to the 1700s.

Hen loves animals. That includes Jack, the family's aging Morgan horse, who has stopped eating. And she finds that someone else has been hired as the veteran's assistant. Not her. And the story takes off from here.

Be ready. You are going to be introduced to Sam, Buster, Tigger, Lucy, Sassy, Willow, Nicholas, Philomena, Ruby, Mena, Bishop Miller, Dr. McDonald, and Adam ... some of those are people. I admit that when that many "characters" (don't forget Petunia) are introduced in the first 5% of a book, my eyes glaze over. But not in "A Daughter's Choice". They all make sense. If Sam is a rooster. It reminded me of the one we had on the farm. Mean thing. Thought he owned the whole farm. But knew absolutely those hens in the henhouse were ALL his. His pecks hurt if you forgot!

Hen thinks of herself as "a Plain woman who doesn't know her place", but she knows what she loves to do, and "keeping the home" is *not* at the top of her list. It's okay, Hen, it's not at the top of my list either. Unfortunately, her father agrees and is determined that she will start acting like a young woman of marriageable age should act. And .... well, you get the picture.

And that Nicolas. Taking her job.
You might think this sounds like a "typical Amish romance". Another way of saying "slightly boring".
"A Daughter's Choice" is not boring. In fact, I sped through this 320-page book like it was only 100 pages. I laughed. I crossed my fingers and toes when Lucy (a young mare) is giving birth. Chuckled as Hen's little sister, Mena, found a way to get THREE cookies.

Whimsical, loving, caring, obstinate, determined ... you will enjoy the characters in this story. This is the 10th book in "The Heart of the Amish" series, which has various writers. I've read seven or eight of them. Some of those folks will show up in this book; however, it could be read as a standalone. I highly recommend "A Daughter's Choice" -- in fact, all of the books in this series.

I received a complimentary digital review copy (DRC) of "A Daughter's Choice" via NetGalley from the publisher, Barbour House. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I appreciate a good story about animals and how important they are to a farm. They are hard work but the rewards out-way the long hours needed to tend to them. Not knowing much about goats, I loved learning more about them and how important it is to care for them. They must be high priority in order for them to produce milk.

Hen became my favorite character because she had determination to see her dream come true. Her love of animals inspires her to continue to at times defy her father who happens to be the Bishop. I didn’t miss the humor in the story such as Hen thinking that manure was a sweet fragrance. Oh my does she need to pay a bit more attention to herself. Her appearance does not set well with her father. There is a definite stubborn streak in Hen when it comes to choosing animals over marriage or house chores.

Nicholas has no idea when he goes to Hen’s farm to care for a sick horse that Hen would argue at every suggestion he has to get the horse feeling better. I liked how he stood his ground and insisted that he knew what he was doing. He has his own battle to deal with that causes him to try even harder.

I did find something very interesting in the story between these two characters. They both battle tradition when it comes to their future. Hen is expected to get married, have a family and be content to stay at home. Long days of household chores, children that need care everyday and staying on top of anything related to the house doesn’t appeal to Hen at all. It may be what her father wants, but Hen is not your typical Amish woman.

Nicholas wants to go to veterinary college but would have to go against his culture. With a deep longing to follow his desire he will have to make hard choices that could hurt how others look at him. Going against how he was raised weighs heavy on his heart. I don’t think he was impressed by Hen at their first meeting either.

With an impressive look at two people who want to follow their dreams, this story gives readers a chance to see how God works in people’s lives. Faith is an important part in their decision and I loved how the author slowly develops a relationship that I was not sure about at first.

Aunt Ginny’s arrival is filled with laughter and family time. Aunt Ginny gives great advice to Hen like, “ it gives me comfort to think God is in charge. We don’t have to understand. We simply have to believe.” Hen knows that her father brought Aunt Ginny here for a very specific reason. Will Hen surrender to God with her whole heart? Can she learn to trust others and allow them to show her how much she is loved?

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

“Hen truly was the pied piper of animals.”

“Faith. Family. Community. Then self.”

Reading A Daughter’s Choice deeply moved me. I was instantly captivated by Hen’s world—her boundless love for animals, especially her goats. However, working with animals wasn’t supported by Hen’s father, despite her dream of becoming a vet assistant. As the Bishop in their Amish community, he was raising his seven children alone after his wife’s passing. Hen didn’t have to worry about disappointing her father regarding her desire for the vet position, as a newcomer named Nicholas was hired for the very job she wanted. Her disappointment was evident, creating tension between them, especially when it came to caring for animals.

Hen was a remarkable protagonist. Her quiet strength, sense of responsibility, and struggle to balance her heart’s desires with her father’s and faith’s expectations will no doubt resonate with readers. While this is primarily Hen’s story, Nicholas has his own story to tell. This part of the story explored the crisis of faith. Watching both Hen and Nicholas navigate their struggles felt incredibly real to me.

Kelly Irvin’s writing is warm and honest, allowing me to feel Hen’s emotions—her doubt, longing, courage, and sadness. The Amish setting provided a serene backdrop that made me reflect on how faith and community influence our choices. I appreciated that the book didn’t rush the relationship between Hen and Nicholas. However, I would have preferred the story to use the Pennsylvania Deutsch translation for the word “Mom,” which is ”Mamm.”

Stories have always held a profound significance for me, and A Daughter’s Choice certainly resonated deeply with me. By the end of the book, I was reminded of the importance of trusting in God’s plan, even when it diverges from our own desires. This book prompted me to reflect on the delicate balance between listening to our hearts and honoring our faith and family.

Many thanks to Barbour and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Henrietta, or Hen for short, is all spunk and sass, preferring to be outside with the animals than inside the home like other Amish women. Hen knows she’s different and she’s perfectly fine with that assessment, but sadly her father, Bishop Miller, does not agree. There is always a struggle between father and daughter as he begins to force Hen to be more domesticated. The problem is her heart is with the animals, and this struggle between father and daughter is heartbreaking to witness, especially with how harsh her father’s words can be.

My heart really went out to Hen. As a woman who has always hated to cook and do “woman things” and all been ridiculed for my choices, I bonded with her plight. My heart too has always lied elsewhere and the craving to be accepted for yourself is real. I am so glad that Hen was able to overcome and find a balance that would lead to a lifetime of happiness and man who accepted her for who she is.

Vet assistant Nicholas Byler has recently moved to the community and is struggling with his own issues. Not only is Nicholas trying to further his veterinary career, but he is also caring for a grandparent that is suffering from dementia. Hen and Nicholas have a rocky start to their relationship but eventually see one another not only in their shared passion for animals but also in the struggle, and what I love is that the growth of their relationship felt so natural. It’s not hard to see why their admiration for one another was a slower burn.

The ending was so sweet and very earned. Over the course of the story, I connected with both Hen and Nicholas and loved seeing them both get the own happily-ever-afters. Faith, family, and the power of love and acceptance flourish in A Daughter’s Choice, and I enjoyed this literary journey.

A Daughter’s Choice: Heart of the Amish #1
Kelly Irvin
Henrietta Miller is a young Amish woman; she is unmarried and goes against the norm. She loves animals about all else. Her father the bishop is frustrated by her; he doubts she will ever find a husband. Her father is so frustrated he has become harsh with her. She wants to start her own business making and selling products such as soap and snacks make from goat’s milk. It takes money to start a business, so she applies for a job as a veterinarian assistant.
Nicholas Byler a Vet Tech gets the job. He is a young Amish man, in the area to care for her grandfather who has dementia. Nicholas is questioning his decision to become a Veterinary.
Henrietta thinks the job is stolen from her. She isn’t happy that he is treating her animals; he acts as if he knows more about her animals than she does. She turns to her business of goat products: soap, snacks, goat’s milk and wool. Her aunt sees the perfect couple in Nicholas and Henrietta and tries to do a little matchmaking.
I quickly fell in love with the characters in this tale. I found myself in tears. This is a beautifully written tale filled with feelings/emotions. The romance between Nicholas and Henriett is sweet romance. A devastating event brought tears to my eyes. The Amish community offer great support. The main characters are interesting and likable. Henrietta never slowed down; she was full of energy. She and Nicholas were perfect for each other. I didn’t like the way Henrietta’s father reacted to her. I felt he was too harsh but she was going against the traditional ways of the Amish.
This is the first book in the Heart of the Amish series.
I received a digital copy of A Daughter’s Choice from NetGalley for review purposes. My reviews are my unbiased opinions.

5 stars, No Choice

A DAUGHTER'S CHOICE (HEART OF THE AMISH BOOK 1)
by KELLY IRVIN

Henrietta "Hen" Miller loves raising her goats and making products to sell from them, like cheese, yogurt, caramel candies, and goat milk fudge. She is quite dedicated to her business, but her father believes that she needs to stay inside the house and work on domestic tasks.

Hen has other ideas to expand her goat business, but her father says NO.

It is hard to imagine not being able to grow your business the way that you want to. Since Hen is Amish, she has to follow her father's wishes for her life.

Nicholas and his sister Lenora came to stay with their grandfather Moses, because he needs looking after. They aren't planning on staying forever, but will stay as long as they are needed. Nicholas is a helper to the local veterinarian for the area. He can help on some of the more minor calls, until the Vet is available.

Hen and Nicholas find that they have similar interests in life. Hen has mostly given up on a suitor. God has a different idea.

This is a Christian Amish fiction novel, it is nice to read and no worries about there being too much religion pushed at you or objectional wording. Highly recommend.

There is a nice glossary of Pennsylvania Deutsch at the beginning of this book, which is very helpful if you're not familiar with the sayings.

I love a good Amish fiction. They’re a great gateway read. Once you grab your first one, you’re hooked and won’t be able to stop reading them.

This book is part of the Heart of the Amish series. There are several books in this series. You can truly read them in any order you want, but you definitely should read them all. You wouldn’t want to miss out on one of them!

Henrietta wants to someday get married and have children. Any good Amish woman wants that. But she also wants to get her own business going. She wants to be a success. Her and her goats and their products.

When Henrietta goes against her father(who is also the Bishop) and applies for a job as a vet assistant, things start to take a turn. Nicholas Byler steals that out from under her. Or at least that’s how she sees it.

Add in a fun aunt who has matmaking plans, and the fun commences. Henrietta is fun as she gets exasperated with Nicholas for treating her animals like he knows more than she does. She’s going to get into wool goats now, and that opens up even more fun!

I loved this novel. So fun. The characters are great, and it’s fun to watch them as they figure out life. Hen definitely reminds me of several of my daughters who would rather be around animals than people.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. A Daughter’s Choice by Kelly Irvin has two unique main characters for an Amish story. Henrietta “Hen” Miller prefers spending time with her goats than keeping house. Her father, the bishop, would rather she spend her time doing household chores like the other women in the district. Nicholas Byler along with his sister, Lenora, have come to town to take care of their grandfather who has dementia. Nicholas obtained the job with the local vet that Hen had applied for, but her father nixed it. I felt for Hen. She has a wonderful spirit, and she is a natural with animals. Her father did everything he could to discourage her. I found him to be very harsh, and I did not like that he was punishing a twenty-two-year-old woman like she was two. I also understood Nicholas’ desire to study to become a veterinarian. The story is well-written with steady pacing. I like that the story is told from Hen and Nicholas’ point of view because it allows readers to see each of their perspectives on the various issues. The themes in A Daughter’s Choice are God’s will, faith, family, and community. A Daughter’s Choice is the tenth book in The Heart of the Amish series. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. I enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout the story and the heartfelt ending. A Daughter’s Choice is a poignant tale with energetic goats, an animated animal lover, a job robber, a cute canine, strained ankle trouble, matchmaker mess, and rampant rumors.

Wonderful and Captivating

Wow! This wonderful story was quite the emotional roller coaster ride. It had me frustrated, laughing, reflecting, soul-searching, and even almost in tears.

First of all, Hen is quite the character. She is not your typical Plain woman, and although I could understand where she was coming from, I initially found her a bit abrasive. Her father, the Bishop, didn't exactly help. While his intentions were understandable, his delivery wasn't. And because Hen didn't quite fit the mold of typical, her actions and reactions often had her and her dad at odds.

Enter Nicholas, who is not a typical Plain man. The funny thing is that the non-typical Plain man and non-typical Plain woman are so much alike in some ways that they initially butt heads. However, little by little, time and circumstances change that, and their deeply caring natures take over. Their journey results in a beautiful and moving story of love, faith, family, and the importance of reflecting on how our spiritual life beliefs and commitments play into our life decisions and God's will, all of which makes this wonderful and captivating story one that I highly recommend.

A Daughter’s Choice by Kelly Irvin is the tenth book in the Heart of the Amish series. This is a series that is written by different authors. This is a nice series of stand-alone stories that focus on family, faith and community. In this story Hen is passionate about her goats but when her sister marries her father makes the decision her brother is to care for them while she runs the house. Nicholas is new to the area to help his sister care for their grandfather who struggles with dementia. He takes a job working as a veterinarian assistant, but he really wants to be a real veterinarian. To do so he would need to leave the faith.

This is a nicely written story that shows the struggles the younger adults deal with in the Amish faith. While they believe in their faith and cherish their families, they long for more. I appreciate how the author shows this and how the older adults are there for the younger ones. I enjoy how Hen’s aunt leaves her family to helps Hen’s family to help her sister with the wedding plans, since their mother is no longer with them. I like how the community comes together to make the wedding day special for everyone. When tragedy strikes the family farm, the community comes together to help them. This is an enjoyable story to read.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

"A Daughter's Choice" is a delightful book by Kelly Irvin that releases on November 1st. Hen (short for Henrietta) is not your typical Amish woman much to her father's chagrin. Hen's father is the bishop which puts more pressure on Hen to conform to what he expects of her. Her mother passed at a young age leaving her father to raise 7 children. Hen has a big heart even if she is a bit unconventional. Hen has a love for animals especially her goat herd, She has a business making products out of her goat's milk-soap, candy, cheese-that adds money to her familie's income. Hen doesn't enjoy cooking, cleaning or being in the house. Hen's life changes when the Englisher vet in town hires an Amish man to be his assistant. Nicholas and Hen get off to a rocky start. Hen hoped to be hired to be the vet's assistant, but her dad interfered and the job went to Nicholas instead. This book has wonderful characters-especially Hen. I laughed a lot reading the many adventures and situations Hen finds herself in. This book is about love, faith, family and trusting God with the path He has chosen for you. Hen is not your typical Amish girl, content to keep her house, sew and cook. She'd rather be with the animals, specifically, her goats. But Nicholas is not the typical Amish man either. His dreams include something that is out of reach for one of the Amish faith he has been baptized into. When Hen and Nicholas meet over an ill horse, their first impressions of each other are not good ones, but sparks are flying in more ways than one.
Hen struggles with her bishop father insisting she leave the animals to her brothers and concentrate her efforts on the household. Nicholas struggles with his grandfather's illness and the dreams that seem so unattainable. They soon find that struggling together and understanding one another's dilemmas works better than remaining at odds with each other, but when the spark of a romance threatens Nicholas's dream, what will he choose? Will Hen be a part of that decision or will she throw away the chance of a lifelong love to raise her goats?
A sweet romance against a backdrop of Amish life including, fun, tragedy and the reality of a medical condition that leaves it effect on everyone involved. Will Nicholas and Hen follow their faith or their dreams and will that take them down the same path or in opposite directions?

A Daughter’s Choice by Kelly Irvin is the tenth book in The Heart of the Amish series. Henrietta Miller loves animals and is currently focused on building a business rather than on romance. When her father, the Bishop, forces her to learn to care for a home rather than tend her animals, she feels smothered. She tried applying for a job as a veterinary assistant, but her father eliminated that possibility.

Meanwhile, newcomer Nicholas Byler seems to steal the veterinary assistant position from under her. But her aunt tries to play matchmaker between them. When he cares for her animals and acts like he knows more than her, Hen feels disturbed.

I have to say, I typically love Amish fiction, but the dynamics among Henrietta, her father, and Nicholas left me wanting a different kind of story. I recognize that many young Amish people struggle to find their place in their communities and with their parents. But I felt like this book, from the very beginning, was too focused on issues of control rather than other dynamics.

So if you enjoy Amish fiction, check out A Daughter’s Choice by Kelly Irvin and the rest of The Heart of the Amish series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

It was a delight to read this sweet heart-warming story and get acquainted with Henrietta Miller, the main character of this book. Henrietta is not a typical young Amish woman. Much to the dismay of her father, who is also the bishop, Henrietta had much rather be in the barnyard with her beloved goats than working in the home and kitchen. Nicholas Boyer, the local vet’s assistant, shares Henrietta’s great love for animals. They each have their own plans for their lives that differ from traditional Amish beliefs. But as Nicholas and Henrietta come to care for each other, they realize that their individual plans will not lead to a future together. Both Nicholas and Henrietta must search their hearts about their commitment to their faith and their families before they can move forward in their lives.

I loved the storyline and characters in this book. I also loved the way that the author gave the reader something to think about, too—-do we put God and others ahead of ourselves, or do we live for ourselves? Author Kelly Irvin has become one of my favorite authors, and I just purchased another of her books today. I’m looking forward to reading some great stories by this talented author.

A Daughter's Choice by Kelly Irvin is the tenth book in The Heart of the Amish series, and Kelly's first book in it. Henrietta (Hen) Miller is still single at 22, and her father, who's also the bishop, despairs of her ever marrying. Instead of enjoying cooking, baking, and keeping the house clean like most Amish women, Hen would MUCH rather be outside tending her beloved goats or working in the barn with the other animals.

When Nicholas Byler and his sister, Lenora, come to town to take care of their grandfather, who has dementia, Hen dislikes Nicholas right away, as he got hired for the vetrinary assistant job that she longed for, and Hen sees him as being a know-it-all. Could their mutual love for animals change their feelings for each other?

This book is a fun addition to the series, and I really enjoyed reading it. Faith and love are major themes in int.

A Daughter's Choice by Kelly Irvin is the tenth book in The Heart of the Amish series.

In her special way, Ms. Irvin shares a sweet escape story that draws you in quickly. This story focuses up on the nontraditional Amish girl, Henrietta (Hen) Miller, who is still single at 22, and loves her animals more than keeping house as a good Amish future wife should.

Enters, Nicholes Byler the new Veterinarian assistant. He and Hen get off on bad footing from their first encounter. Both love animals and both think they know best. The both are stubborn.

The characters are delightful and realistic. It is fun to see the interactions among thes characters. The storyline itself is fantastic.
You can’t wait to see what’s on the next page.

In my opinion, this is another Kelly Irvin five star book. Release day is November 1, 2025.

“How easy to say, ‘Thy will be done.’ How hard to mean it.”
I read this book just a few days after Charlie Kirk was murdered, and the timing could not have been better. A sweet escape on one hand, it is also a timely reminder that life is short and there are no guarantees of tomorrow. We must take joy in today, knowing “Contentment is learned. It’s not always easy, but it’s always possible.” I believe that if Hen and Nathaniel can overcome their selfishness and learn to put others first while also seizing the opportunities God placed before them now, then so can I. Full of faith, love, and triumph over painful circumstances, this is a delightful book that goes much deeper than the surface level story. Read this if you like going beyond the entertainment factor to more meaningful spiritual lessons. Recommend!
