Pls consider this a rhetorical question -- why does an American read the audiobook? I'm 25% in, and his accent and overdramatic narration (and nothing dramatic has happened yet!) are bugging me. I am, however, not a quitter. :)

It’s a exciting and dramatic story of men at the brink of survival. It is more important because it is true. I read Robinson Crusoe at about that age. The Wager is more vivid and engaging. Excellent choice for boys and girls. Excellent choice for a classroom book as well. (less)

Could Anson have been autistic? He's described as remote, rarely speaking except with a few trusted friends; a relative noted that Anson's lack of communication skills "drew upon him the ill will of many". A diplomat said Anson was so unknowing about the world that he'd been "round it, but never in it." And yet, he was exceptionally skilled at what he loved (seamanship) and had high notions of sincerity and honor.

First, why do we need to label him as anything except as a Sailor and Captain of a ship? That in itself and his exceptional skill made him a noteworthy man. As far as "knowing" or "unknowing" goes, he and the men who aligned themselves with him, for the most part, survived. Surviving the ordeals they all went through is enough to applaud all of them. Great Story. I thouroughly enjoyed every page of it.
